My Morning Coffee

My Morning Coffee

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, "there's nothing quite like my morning coffee. Yes, I know, it's not just me, it's you and the many millions of Americans and people all around the World who just can't get their day started without a good Cup of Joe, Cappuccino, Espresso, or whatever way you drink it, "It's Coffee," and we all love it dearly, you, me, your grandmother, everybody.

I got up, and made my breakfast, and my daily morning cup of tea, not not coffee at first. I'm a bit different, I love going out for my coffee, to a nice cafe, and I very rarely drink coffee in my house. I have it at the cafe, and that makes it all the more special to me. Yes , I get up, have breakfast with a cup of tea, I shower, get dressed, then I'm out, on my way to my favorite cafe. "Get my Coffee."

Like just about any other day, I walked into the cafe, and felt so good immediately. They have nice people working there, and yes, they have coffee, and I'm going to get one. I can already smell it brewing. It smell so good, it's coffee.

I great the nice young lady behind the counter, "Good Morning," she smiles and says good moring back. "What can I get you she says."

"A coffee with milk, please," I reply. The girl gets me my coffee, I bid her a nice day, and she reciprocates, and I have my coffee in hand. Yes I feel good. Does it sound crazy? I think not? Besides the fact that I love the taste and how my morning cup of coffee makes me feel, I love that just for about $4, I can go to the cafe, get a nice cup of coffee or two (refills), sit down at a table, in a nice pleasant atomosphere, liten to sofe music (hopefully), do wome writing, sip my coffee, and relax. There's nothing better. I really do love it. It gives me such great pleasure, and I think that's about all I have to say right now.

"Drink your Coffee, and have a wonderful day."

COFFEE & BANANA BREAKFAST in NY

My Perfect Breakfast? Well, my Perfect Breakfast is a bit unusual. When I get up in the morning, I turn on my Radio (1010 WINS NEWS) on my way to the bathroom. I listen to the first News of the day. Go to the living room, turn on the TV and watch it for 20-30 minutes or so. It helps me wake up. After watching a bit of TV I go and take a shower, dry-off, then brush my teeth, still no breakfast. I get dressed, fill my bad with my Mac Book Pro, battery charger and what-not.     Now I'm getting ready for breakfast. I grab a Banana to eat along the way. Along the way to my local cafe where I will have Part II of my perfect breakfast. Part II ? A nice hot cup of American Coffee of course. Yes a good ol Cup of Joe and the greatest coffee of all, American Style .. Oh I know I'd get millions of complaints and disagreements on that one. Millions of French, Italians, and other Europeans would scoff, "Are You Kidding? American Coffee The Best?" Wel Yes! Yes for me and a couple hundred million Americans I'm sure .. The coffee at my local cafe is awesome. They buy their beans from New York's # 1 Best Coffee Roast, people who have been in business fro more than 100 years, not upstarts like Starbucks. Yes, No Starbucks like me, I'm "No Robot," not a "Follower" like most Americans. Starbucks? Way too commercial, and besides, I don't really like the taste. Starbucks has a sort of "Pissy" tatse to their coffee. I'm not trying to be funny or a Wiseguy here, I'm serious, Starbucks has a sort of acidic pissy kind of flavor to their Pikes Peak Coffee Roast. I noticed it a few years ago when because of the Wifi situation back then, I was going to Starbucks a bit here and there. I've never been a fan, but I do find them convenient at times. Anyway, dam, how'd I get on this subjects, this is not supposed to be about Starbucks, who in a way I sort of despise.                                                              Banana by Andy Warhol
OK, back to my perfect breakfast. So I grab a Banana on my way out of the house. As I walk the 2 1/2 blocks to the cafe, I eat my banana. "No not that Banana you wiseguys!" I eat the Banana, the most perfect little package of fruit of all. Yes it comes in a beautiful lean yellow package that's just perfect. And inside, Bananas have numerous vitamins and nutrients and is a great source of fiber that we all need for good digestive affects. Bananas contain a good amount of antioxidants such as lutein, Vitamin B 6, some vitamin C, and of course it's one of the best sources of Potassium .. Yes a Banana is quite good for you. It's fairly tasty, inexpensive and easy to eat. So there you go part one of my perfect breakfast.     Part II, The Perfect Breakfast, my perfect breakfast. Part 2, yes, back to my coffee. The coffee roast by Porto Rico Coffee Roasters who have been in business in New York's Greenwich Village since 1907 .. Owned and operated by the Longo Family for more than 100 years. They buy green coffee beans and roast them all themselves into perfect Italian Espresso, Pete's Blend (1/3 French Roast 2/3 American Roast) and various different blends roast from coffee beans from around the World; Brazil, Columbia, Sumatra, Africa, and Central America, Porto Rico is The Best.  I often wonder why anyone would ever want to buy bags of the super commercial bags of Starbucks Coffee at $12.95 a pound when they cun buy the Superior Artisanal Small Batch Roast Coffee of Porto Rico for 30% less money? It just doesn't make sense.    So my perfect breakfas? I eat my perfect Banana on the way to the cafe. I get to the cafe and order a large coffee (Porto Rico) from the wonderfully sweet counter-ladies at the cafe. I get my coffee, get my table, sit down and relax. Oh how I love it so. This wonderful morning ritual. I ate my banana, now I sit down at my favorite cafe, all comfy and cozy. I pull out my laptop, surf the net,  I write, I sip my coffee, I relax, I'm in Heaven. That's my most perfect Breakfast, it's a Banana, a Cup of Joe (good ol American Coffee), my Mac, and a perfectly wonderful neighborhood cafe. "Oh the simple pleasures of life!"

In NEW YORK REGULAR COFFEE is KING

COFFEE

Coffee and Cafes. Two things very near and dear to me. Million so others as well. In New York, we have the Best, “For getta bout it Seattle” !!! I remember 25 years ago and more when there were no Starbucks and just very few cafes in the hole city. More or less the only cafes were in Greenwich Village, Little Italy, and the East Village. There were hole neighborhoods, completely cafe-less and if you wanted to go to one you had to go to the Village or Little Italy, nothing on the hole Upper East Side.

Anyway, Coffee and Cafes are a huge thing these days and part of many a life.
Coffee and cafes, let me tell you about some of the best and my impressions. Hey, I’m a guy who has been frequenting cafes for years, each and every day, just about. I haven’t Jumped on the Band Wagon in the past 5 or ten years. I’ve been riding it for 30.

Number “One,” in New York,  a good Cup of Joe is King, “Regular” not
Grande Caramel Latte and overpriced crap like that. Not the esoteric overpriced espresso, Cortado, Machiato, Blue Bottle, and Site Specific Coffee, and blends that try to break down and make too make of a good simple thing. You know what I mean. A “Cup of Joe,” is King. Used to be Five Cents at coffee shops all over the city. Well that’s going way back. Hey don’t get me wrong, I love Espresso, Espresso Machiatto, and the great Cortado they serve at Abraco. It’s just that I gotta tell you, a “Regular” is King and let’s hope it always will be.

Abraco is utterly awesome. Maybe the Best Single tasting coffee in town, is their Cortado. Man it’s tasty. Just out of this world. But I have some problems with Abraco, as I’m not someone to pay a Premium for what I call “Hit and Run Coffee”

What is “Hit and Run Coffee” you ask? Well, let me tell you. Hit and Run Coffee is a coffee that you get at places like Caffeteria, Abraco, Third Rail Coffee, and tiny little Coffee Bars that have little or no chairs and tables and maybe just a small counter space for standing. Listen, I’m not in the habit of paying  $3.50, $4.50 or “More” for a cup of coffee, having to stand at a counter, drinking it in short time and leaving. Ending up $5.00 or more less in my pockets. Well you may think, “What’s $5.00?” Right? What’s Five Dollars? Imagine if you have 5 $5.00 coffees a week for one year. Do you know how much money that adds up to? Relax, I’ll do the Math for you. That’s $1,300 my friends. No small sum? Multiply that by 5 years and you’re talking $6,500, or by Ten Years and we’re talking $13,000. That’s a lot of Friggin Cash my friends. Hey I’m not saying you should not go out and have coffee. I do all the time. Heck, on my days off, I sometimes end up in cafes three times in one day.  I spend about $1,508 a year on coffee, $7,500 in five years or about $15,000 in ten. That’s a lot. But I get a lot. Heck, I used to spend about $2,200 a year on coffee,  $10, 000 or more in 5, or about $20,000 in ten years. But I have cut back. I’ve seen the light. I hardly ever spend $5.00 on a coffee any more. All I need is the $2.00 variety. A good honest “Cup of Joe,” a “Regular.” And I need to get my money’s worth. If I just wanted a good cup can easily make a great one in my house for just “15 Cents a Cup,” but I go and have one at a Café for 15 times that amount. Why? The extra $2.35 I pay for the coffee plus tip, is to be able to “Sit” down and relax in a nice pleasant atmosphere. I’m not gonna pay 27 times ($3.75 Average price coffee at Upscale Coffee Bar) to stand at a counter and not being able to sit down and relax. At home I can  make a tasty cup of Coffee from the Highest Quality Coffee money can buy with the coffee I buy at  “Porto Rico Coffee” on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, just a half block from my house. No, I pay all that extra money to sit in the pleasant environment of a nice coffee. Also to see other people, maybe a friend or the possibility of meeting someone new and interesting. I read, I write, I hang with friends, I relax. I can not do that at a overpriced “Coffee Bar” that doesn’t have any place to sit.

And speaking of Porto Rico Coffee, it mystifies me that people are so foolish as to pay $11.95 or more for a mass-produced commercial pound of Coffee from Starbucks instead of going to the “Best Coolest Place in Town” to be some of the World’s Finest Coffee at Porto Rico Coffee, people who have been doing this for more than 100 years, not 20. It just doesn’t make sense. By the way, the coffee I buy at Porto Rico is just $5.99 and $6.99 a pound, half the price of a pound of Starbucks Coffee.

Anyway. It’s all up to you. I’ll  stick with my Regular “Cup of Joe” with a Espresso and Cappuccino thrown in here and there, and as a special treat a Cortado from Abraco every now and then. And I’ll get to sit down and relax with my coffee each day, putting an extra $1,000 a year in my pocket, or Airfare and a few nice meals when I go on vacation. How bout you, “Hit and Run”and pay more, or Sit Down and Relax, Pay Less, Save, and put a Thousand Bucks a Year in your pockets, or $10,000 in ten ?
